Short of editing the css file, which I am lacking to skill to do, is there a way to adjust the width of a theme to match the width of my website.
My website is 1000px wide and it appears that most of the themes are over 1200px wide. In particular, the Desert Landscape theme.

Editing the CSS file isn't really all that painful . If you can find the width settings in the css file I'd recommend going that route. That way you don't have to set it for every page individually.
